About the Gurkha Memorial Fund

Honoring over 200 years of distinguished service and sacrifice

The Gurkha Memorial Fund is a UK registered charity (Number 1137393) dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of Gurkha soldiers who have served with distinction in the British Armed Forces.

Our History

Established to create and maintain a lasting memorial to Gurkha service, the Fund represents the culmination of efforts by veterans, military personnel, and supporters who recognized the need for a permanent tribute to these remarkable soldiers.

The memorial itself stands as a testament to more than 200 years of Gurkha service in the British Army, from the first Gurkha regiments formed in 1815 following the Anglo-Nepalese War, through countless conflicts and campaigns, to the present day.

The Gurkhas

Gurkha soldiers come from Nepal and have served the British Crown with extraordinary loyalty, bravery, and distinction for over two centuries. Their reputation for courage in battle is legendary, and their motto "Better to die than be a coward" reflects the warrior spirit that has made them one of the most respected fighting forces in military history.

Gurkha regiments have fought with distinction in both World Wars, the Falklands conflict, Iraq, Afghanistan, and numerous other campaigns. They have earned numerous Victoria Crosses and other gallantry awards, cementing their place in military history.

The Royal Gurkha Rifles

The Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR) is the infantry regiment of the British Army specifically for Gurkha soldiers from Nepal. Formed in 1994 from a union of the four existing Gurkha regiments, the RGR continues the proud traditions and fighting spirit of its predecessor units:

  • 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles)
  • 6th Queen Elizabeth's Own Gurkha Rifles
  • 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles
  • 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles

Today, the Royal Gurkha Rifles continues to serve with distinction as part of the British Army, maintaining the highest standards of military excellence that have characterized Gurkha service throughout history.
